Archways to Opportunity Graduate To Throw First Pitch at Congressional Women's Softball Game

Jayla Reed joins members of the United States Congress on the field to support Young Survival Coalition

Tonight, a team of women Members of Congress and the Washington, D.C. press corps will compete in a softball rivalry eight years in the running. Proceeds from the Congressional Women’s Softball Game benefit Young Survival Coalition, a global organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. This year’s fundraising efforts total over $200,000, setting a new record. The event has raised more than $875,000 for the charity since the Game began in 2009.
McDonald’s has been the proud lead sponsor of the event for the last five years. This year, Jayla Reed, an employee of independent franchisee Carl Blickle in Akron, Ohio, will have the honor of throwing out the first pitch of the game. The 24-year old single mother completed her education through McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity program, which offers free accredited Career Online High School diplomas to eligible employees along with other benefits.
"I'm so proud of myself," Jayla said. "I'm so excited. It was a journey getting here, but I made it. I did it. My participation in Archways to Opportunity is opening doors I never imagined, from earning my high school diploma online to the opportunity to attend college, and now throwing out the first pitch at the Congressional Women's Softball Game to support a great charity.”
Since April 2015, more than 5,800 people have enrolled in Archways to Opportunity. McDonald’s has provided millions of dollars in tuition assistance for eligible employees to achieve their high school diplomas and college degrees.
Archways to Opportunity provides a range of opportunities with programs all designed to meet employees at their point of need, including earning a high school diploma, receiving tuition assistance for college classes and learning English. All of the following programs are available to both McDonald's employees and the employees of participating independent Owner/Operators in the United States.
